As I’ve been thinking about meditation more and more, I’ve noticed that some activities that are part of daily life can feel like a form of meditation. These activities aren’t perceived as typical meditative practices but still put my mind at ease and generate stillness when I am doing them.

These activities generate a kind of meditative thought process in which thoughts are more clear or it completely clears the mind. These activities can also create a sense of calm within ourselves, spontaneously, as we go about our lives.

I personally have found that driving a familiar route, running (or any other form of exercise really), drawing or leisurely walking can create a meditative state. Personally, I find the mental state this kind of meditation produces to be conducive to thinking, gaining perspective and problem solving, as well as finding inner peace.

Meditation is not evasion, it is a serene encounter with reality.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Sitting meditation isn’t for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t alternative activities that people can do to clear their mind and enter meditative mind states. This article has some more great suggestions for alternative forms of meditation if seated meditation isn’t working for you! I personally really resonate with the concept of non-judgemental awareness because it emphasizes bringing the qualities of meditation into our lives and everything we do.
